Go Short?

Another hair post lol.

Soooo.. I’ve been thinking about this for awhile (okay, a few days lol).

I feel like I want to just chop off my hair. I’ve gotten it cut a few times this year. It was actually the longest its been since I first got it cut in third grade back in October. Then I got it cut short in the back and kept the bangs. Like Rihanna hair cut but the curly version. I really liked that one actually. Then I got it cut just a little bit shorter.

But the last time I got it drastically cut short was before 11th grade, after I broke up with my boyfriend. My hair had been getting longer, and after the breakup I just wanted to get rid of it all. It was a wonderful feeling, chopping it all off. Then I went to school and felt crappy about my hair, since short hair isn’t “hot” in high school anyway. (That was also before I got into Body/Fat Acceptance stuff, so my self image had not yet improved).

I went from this- my hair long enough to be tied back-(this picture is me at teh Prom! I’m not with the boy anymore, but damn that was an awesome dress- which my grandma made too! I was def. saucy lol):
Prom piccie of mee in my kimono!

(lol, look at my crappy pose XD!) I AM A CAMI WHORE!! lol.

Those pictures are almost (will be in August) two years old.

So I dunno..

I feel like I just want to get it all chopped off. Go to college fresh and crap lol. Not have to deal with my hair in the morning (bleh).

But, at the same time, I feel like now that I actually have grown my hair out, I like the curls, the poof lol. It’s crazy, but I like it that way. Like it’s my “trademark” or whatever lol. The part of me that says “short hair won’t be porportionate to your fat ass” is hanging around too. I guess sometimes I feel like I need my hair to be longer because it balances me out. I hate that voice though. It really needs to just die. Then I go around online to look for short hair pictures, and the advice is that short hair is for women with “pixie like features” or whatever- meaning little nose, big eyes, those feature that I do not have. Plus, everytime I get my hair cut short, I regret it the next week and think “if I hadn’t cut my hair, it would be *insert length here* long by now”.

I don’t know if I even like my hair long. I’ve never managed to get it past my shoulders, ever. My mom got me to get it cut short in 3rd grade, and ever since then it’s been short. So, all the time i’ve had short hair when I was younger I don’t know if I ever really wanted it, I was just doing what my mom wanted me to do. (Like when your mom makes you eat vegetables and you hate them, but once they stop making you you realize you actually like them. lol).
And here I am, as an 8 year old (I think lol), with my short hair. Aren’t I cute?

I always find women who have short hair to be awesome. They’re different. I feel like I can always relate to them right away lol, since I always had shorter hair growing up. It takes some guts to have short hair, because it’s not “hot” or whatever. I like being different, it’s more fun. But again, that’s where my stupid voice comes in and says that short hair will just make my face look chubbier or whatever. I feel like I’m one of those stupid girls you see on TV who is afraid to get her hair cut. I don’t like being like that, like my hair is a safety blanket or something.

I’m just scared if I get it cut I’ll hate it and I’ll miss ”my” curls. But then I think that I want something different. And then I also think that my hair will grow back if I hate it. But then I think that I want to be “hot” at college. Then I think I don’t give a shit about that and I want to go to college to learn, not to find a future husband. Then I think it will be nice not to have to deal with my hair in the morning, and it will be so much cooler in the hot summer. Plus my head won’t be weighed down as much lol. And if I have short hair I can show off my cute chubby face, or show off earrings, or use makeup since you will actually be able to see it. I just want to feel FRESH and FREE! lol. And now that prom has passed, I don’t need to worry about doing anything with my hair for awhileeee. I also wouldn’t mind shedding my high school hair. Bleh, it’s over! I want it GONE lol.

The pluses seem to outweigh the minuses, but I’m still worried I won’t like it and I’ll be fugly forever! (stupid voice. DIE!) Which is, obviously, a stupid thought lol. Just the inner idiot talking.

So anywho, wondering what you gals/guys think. (lol, this is probably just me posting to have people tell me that I will look great with short hair! You know, when you say something to someone else just so they back you up on it? lol..) but anywho, do tell me what you think, and give reasons. (I mean, don’t just say “short hair is ugly!”… erm, that does not help.)

And here for your entertainment is Lizzie through the ages (lol, more like from 6th to 12th grade)

And I will be posting graduation pics, hopefully tomorrow. I just wanted to get these hair thoughts out of my head. I’m not going to the hairdresser for awhile- we don’t even have our next appointment made yet- but I feel like I really want to do it and wanted to know your thoughts. (since the hair coloring post was made alittle late lol). (I will also do the book post sometime soon. Now that I have all summer to do nothing lol)

Thanks for any thoughts/ advice!

  1. Well, I like the pic of you where you have the red shirt on. See, you look good in short hair, but it depends on how you ‘do it. You look uber cute when the curls are tight like in that pic with the red shirt, but I don’t think its as cute when your hair is poofy like in the one below with the black shirt.

But also, your hair WILL grow back if you cut it. But if you don’t cut it, you’re going to keep thinking about. Anyways, I think you should give it a few weeks to see if its not just an impulse that’ll go away. Oh – and I can’t see any pics of you with longer hair, so I’m not sure how that looks.

  2. I love the picture of you (second one down from the top of this post) where your hair is curly and you’re wearing a dark green shirt. It’s beautiful! :) I think you look really good, seriously. (and this is being said without any creepiness involved) it’s purely just my opinion

  3. I’m with Yvette – I LOVE the haircut (and color) in the green shirt picture. You look awesome.

  4. Leave it long for a little while– too much change when you’re going through a major transition can be a pain in the ass. Then, if/when you decide to chop it, everyone will ooh and aah over you. hehe

Then again, I’m one of those girls who constantly does my hair differently… I just grew it out from chin length/shorter, and I’m enjoying it for a bit before the next big hair event

  5. I also think you look awesome in that green shirt pic, and I love the way your hair looks in your senior photos. But yes, if you have any pictures of yourself with long hair, it would help–I don’t really know how you look with long hair.

  6. Wow, I think you have been rocking your hair for a couple of years now, both the green and red shirt pictures and the 12th grade pic. My hair is very similar, just I have some annoying wavy bits that don’t curl as nicely. I have a heckuva time finding someone who can really cut curly hair.
I’ve have my hair uber-short and below shoulder-length, depending on what sort of look I was feeling. But that short-hair-makes-you-look-fatter thing is such bull — your hair cut directs the eye to your face, your clothes can direct it to the body. The hair-past-your-double-chin thing is bull, too. If your eyes are a great feature, say, then play that off. Another pet peeve: all fat people do not have round face shapes! But, everyone I know cut her hair in college, during or after freshman year — it seemed symbolic, even if it was coincidence. So take your time and get a good consultation or just go for it — and stomp your foot at that stupid voice. And you are already hot!

  7. I guess I must be awesome, because I’ve had short hair since I was 7, LOL. It used to be almost down to my shoulders, and thick, like a horse’s mane. My mom got tired of dealing with it, so I got whacked.

Now I could never think of having it past my cheeks. I do have a very round face, and I went into one of those virtual hairbooths at the ocean one year. The long hair did not look good on me AT ALL!!! Plus, having short hair is easy to care for. As for short hair not being “hot,” hello—Jamie Lee Curtis and Halle Berry anyone?

But you can do either short or long. I say whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident!

  8. This could be way off base but…you might enjoy…..

    an UNDERcut!
    * : )

I have been sporting one for, yes, years now. I shave my neck up to…let’s see…just about mid-ear, now, since I am currently growing out a layer.
Then your hair will be curly on top, and when you wear it up ~ voila! ~ cuteness with the shaved underside!
I started wearing this style b/c my hair is fine and straight as a stick. The under layer would always tangle and mat if I wore shirts with collars or sweaters…the matted parts would break off and never grow back, and blah blah blah.
I like the feeling of the just-shaved-ness when I touch it up – about once a month or so. When I wear my hair down, people don’t even know about the shaved part.
    * ; )

  9. My vote… as unimportant as it is since you dont even know me, is longer! I think it looks good both ways, but i prefer it longer.

  10. I’m going through the same dilemma right now! My hair is shoulder length right now, and on one hand, it’s nice to be able to just throw it back (especially if it’s dirty-ish) in a ponytail, but short hair is also the fun! Honestly, you can pull off anything, gawgeous girl. I love the picture in the green shirt. The short hair makes you look extra sassy. :) I love your blog by the way. I don’t think I’ve commented before, but you rock.

  11. Hey–we have the same hair! Except mine is frizzy. I love short hair and I tend to agree–women with short hair always intrigue me. Right now I have long hair because I can put it up when I work out but I had short hair–like half an inch short–a few years ago and liked it but when I grew it out I did wind up going through an unfortunate mullet stage. I like the green shirt picture and the last picture the best but you appear to have awesome hair that looks good at any length.

  12. I think your hair is awesome right now, but I think big poofy short curly hair is also awesome. So I think you should cut it if you want to. Of course that’s easy for me to say, because my hair grows fast and isn’t that curly.

I would try to go to someone who specializes in curly hair if you can find one (which is sort of useless advice… everyone always says to ask at the salon, but I’ve never gotten an answer more specific then “oh, we all cut curly hair,” so it’s not easy to find these mysterious “curl specialists” IME) or at least someone who works well with “younger,” more complicated cuts. I chose my current stylist because my friend got a really nice short cut that looked very trendy and soft, not at all “mom hair” like when I’ve tried to get mine cut short by just any random stylist. So if you see a friend who has a really nice cut, especially a curly or short cut (or both!), maybe consider trying her stylist. Because the only concern I would have would be that someone would make your hair too matronly looking, either because they can’t work with curly hair or because they wouldn’t really “get” what you were after.

If you do cut it short, I bet it would look really cute back in a headband!

  13. I’m a total long hair freak. I’m growing mine and I follow various tips and things to get it sleek and pretty, I love being able to braid it and things, and I would kill for hair down to my waist with curls like yours.

At least until I think about the pains of looking after curly hair. For what it’s worth, I think a longer look suits you, of all the pictures the first with the omgawesome outfit and hair accessories is a sophisticated look, and the 12th grade (or last photo) is the one I like most.

Short hair is…cool. And yet so can gorgous long locks. It isn’t about balancing out your weight, it’s about a beautiful part of you. Having extremely long hair, and I mean tail bone and beyond, is a commitment in itself. Even my bra strap length hair (nearly at my waist) is both easy to look after and yet can still take some time and patience with it.

You’ve had it short before, and from what I can tell it looks good. Long would also be good, I’d love to see your curls long!

Anyways, there is some great advice about getting a cut above me. I know nothing about maintaining anything except a boob cut, so….I shall leave that to others!

  14. Lizzie!!!! I miss you and emily so much. :(

OMG!! I need to read Twilight…i read some reviews and I love it already….i think i’m getting today…no actually i’m getting it.

And love the hair cut by the way!!!

    visit me on facebook!!

  15. Well, as the lone guy here I think I will state (again) that I think when you wear your hair short (and pulled back) it does more to complement the shape of your face. This is just my personal opinion, so take it as you will (which I know you will anyway :P ).

There is nothing wrong with making a change in your appearance from High School to College. Alot of people do it (some just take longer), so don’t sweat it.

Congrats on graduating. You probably had a better week last week than I did since I was in Atlanta looking over a house I’m inheriting….with no Air Conditioning (some putz stole the condenser) and no Hot Water. So I basically roasted (it was 105F one afternoon) and was icky all week. Not exactly how I wanna spend my freetime.

  16. [...] guys don’t have to comment on this if you don’t want, seeing as I am practically spewing what I spewed before and not saying anything new… I just to let it out for myself.. [...]
